Invited Guest Speaker Presentation on August 13th, 7-8:30 pm. Featuring Mexican photographer, writer, and educator Arturo Soto. Arturo holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Oxford and graduate degrees from the School of Visual Arts and University College London. Arturo’s work involves photographing cities, examining different kinds of markers on their streets. His photobooks, In the Heat (2018), A Certain Logic of Expectations (2021), and Border Documents (2025), construct photographic narratives that challenge conventional notions of place and the cultural values underlying them. In his talk, Arturo will discuss the strategies employed in his books to represent the urban landscape, focusing on the role that text plays in communicating more explicitly an emotional experience of these cities, which complicates the perceived objectivity of documentary photographs.
